West Virginia is one of those places that has near-mythic connotations for ATV riding. With lush forests and deeply sculpted mountains, many regard the quad-state area of southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, east Tennessee and western North Carolina as one of the best ATV riding regions in the United States. Living in nearby Pennsylvania, we’ve been to the “heart of Appalachia” at least 50 times and have never tired of the extreme riding and beautiful scenery this area offers.

Hardcore bikers, weekend warriors, and wannabe’s who shed their pinstripes and tie for a black leather vest have long flocked to the Black Hills of South Dakota for the event simply known as Sturgis. The week holds all the promise of a good old fashioned Roman Bacchanalia on two wheels, and while the evening’s debauchery is half the reason to attend for many, equally appealing is riding the serpentine byways through the Black Hills during the daytime.

There are plenty of thrill rides at every theme park in Florida, but until the Pirates of the Caribbean really start shooting at the tour boats, few if any are as exhilarating as piloting an ATV through the Florida outback. Recently we had the chance to ride a trail system under development in the Ocala National Forest, and it’s our new favorite park in the Sunshine State.

The mid-June Summer Stampede weekend is one of Kentucky’s premier ATV festivals. Combining competition, participation and fundraising, the event is a collaborative production of the Harlan County Ridge Runners (HRCC) ATV Club and Harlan County. The Brimstone ride area in Tennessee offers just about every type of outdoor recreation any sportsperson could ever want, and it’s a great place to get back to nature with the entire family. Recently we had a chance to experience parts of it ourselves, and we can’t wait to go back!

All this combines to make Wallace a hotspot for the ATV crowd because of its unparalleled scenic views and wildlife.

Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, Arkansas

ATV riding has become one of the most popular adventure attractions in “The Natural State.” Hitting the designated trails on an ATV provides an exciting way to explore the backwoods beauty. Despite being close geographically, the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests are really two separate areas with many differences. They are distinct in their own topographical, geological, biological, cultural and social differences, yet each makes up a part of the overall National Forest system.

Explorers have always been among my favorite historical figures. Reading about Cortez, Magellan, fur traders and mountain men, I could only imagine what it must have been like to crest a hill, emerge from the trees and know that you were the first person to discover an area. What was it like to name a river, a mountain or a lake, and who would you name it after? While opportunities for new discoveries are disappearing like leaves on a windy fall day, the feeling has not. There's still a way for us to experience what the first explorers must have felt when they ventured into wild new territory — atop our ATVs.
