Where can I ride?

Finding new trails to explore on your ATV

Where can I ride?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply plunk down $20 and buy a book called “Every Single Ride Area in the U.S.”? Unfortunately, nothing like that exists nor, most likely, will it ever exist. There are too many different government agencies and private entities running ride areas to find them all organized under one roof. Besides that, it seems as if many smaller riding areas are known only to locals, who aren’t too keen on letting the location of their favorite spots become public knowledge.

Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, Arkansas

ATV riding has become one of the most popular adventure attractions in “The Natural State.” Hitting the designated trails on an ATV provides an exciting way to explore the backwoods beauty. Despite being close geographically, the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests are really two separate areas with many differences. They are distinct in their own topographical, geological, biological, cultural and social differences, yet each makes up a part of the overall National Forest system.

Riding Canada's Elliot Lake Trail System

Journey of Discovery

Does nature get any more beautiful? Spots like this are everywhere along the Elliot Lake trail system.

Explorers have always been among my favorite historical figures. Reading about Cortez, Magellan, fur traders and mountain men, I could only imagine what it must have been like to crest a hill, emerge from the trees and know that you were the first person to discover an area. What was it like to name a river, a mountain or a lake, and who would you name it after? While opportunities for new discoveries are disappearing like leaves on a windy fall day, the feeling has not. There's still a way for us to experience what the first explorers must have felt when they ventured into wild new territory — atop our ATVs.

Getting Back To The Basics

A new tool in New Canaan's Police ArsenalA new tool in New Canaan's Police ArsenalYou can teach an old dog new tricks, after all. That's something we learned recently while attending a "Basic Ops"  (Basic UTV Operation) course hosted by Ashmore Enterprises. With 37 years of training some of the finest first-responder teams in the world--and a no-nonsense attitude about being prepared--world-renowned tactical instructor Tom Ashmore has developed a variety of one-day seminars in the use of UTVs for a number of emergency applications. "Adapt, improvise, overcome"  is what the former Marine emphasizes throughout the training. Only one first-responder unit is trained at a time and class size ranges from a minimum of three people to a maximum of six. Currently, the course is only offered to law enforcement agencies, fire departments and S&R (Search & Rescue) teams.

Experiencing GNCC Racing for the First Time

The 32-year-old Virgin

With the Polaris Outlaw 525 ready to go, I just needed to get myself mentally ready for the race that was about to begin.

Amazingly, in 15 years of racing, I've never done a GNCC before. True, I've raced in countless local Cross-Country races over the years, but I've never had the opportunity to tackle a GNCC event; the closest I've come is to cover the event from in back of a camera lens instead of mounted on an ATV seat. All this was about to change, however, when Polaris presented us with the Outlaw challenge in 2007. As part of that challenge we had to race in one WORCS race and two GNCC races. As you've seen in previous issues, we've been getting the Outlaw ready to tackle a GNCC, and finally the day has come

The 3 R's of UTV School

South Kingston Fire Department negotiating the moguls with the departments Polaris Ranger.

Back in the mid-'50s the US government came out with a funny-looking little vehicle called the M274, commonly referred to as the Mule. This "go-anywhere" vehicle was well designed and well suited for any terrain, and some consider it the forerunner of the present-day UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle). Back then if you were assigned to operate a Mule you received special training, either at a school or on the job, in order to become a proficient operator. Nowadays many police and fire departments and S&R (Search & Rescue) teams have

HONDA ATV -- More American-made than you probably think

2007 Honda Ranchers make their way toward the end of the assembly line.

"Yeah, but it isn't a Honda." I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I've heard that phrase. I seem to hear it every time I present another manufacturer's new-model ATV to a Honda ATV owner, and that's before they even throw a leg over the new machine and give it a spin on the trail. I'm convinced that Honda ATV owners are the most stubborn, closed-minded and biased people on the planet. Because of this, I've actually made it a policy to be very picky about who I employ as a test rider. Militant Honda owners need not apply!

Track Fun In A Tomcar

Over 20 UTVs came to race in Whiplash's Firebird Grand Prix.

"Well, they said I couldn't roll it!" I said to myself as I gripped the wheel harder, allowing the vehicle I was piloting at that moment to slam into the deep ruts of the steep left-hand turn I was attempting to negotiate during Whiplash's Firebird Grand Prix. The vehicle's tires found the rut, and I was pushed into my harness as it railed the turn at full speed and we made the pass on one of our competitors, spraying sand and roost for the many cameras as we went by — amazingly, still on all four wheels!
